2024 PCU Games, Words of Gratitude

Gratitude pours from the Panathlon family to each of the 2024 PCU Games 61 teams and their athletes, as well as to the Rectors, National University Sport Federation Presidents, Directors, Heads of Delegations, referees, volunteers, and staff who collectively orchestrated an unforgettable experience at the 25th PCU Games. Their dedication and spirit made it truly remarkable.

The PCU Committee will be reaching out to all participating universities shortly to assess the organization of the 25th PCU Games and explore avenues for enhancing their experience even further. We earnestly hope to welcome back all participating teams next year.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the AP University of Applied Sciences and Arts and Antwerp, the gracious host of the 2024 PCU Games. Special recognition is due to Gert Christens, Director of the Student Center at AP, whose efforts were instrumental in bringing the PCU Games to life in the dynamic city of Antwerp.

A special acknowledgment goes to Alina Baranova from PCU Antwerp, Nils Van de Velden (Chairman of Panathlon Antwerp), and Stijn Lemmens, Chairman of the 2024 PCU Games Organizing Committee. Without their tireless dedication, this successful edition would not have been possible. Even now, they continue to curate a photo album capturing the essence of the 25th PCU Games, which will be available in the coming weeks.

We also express gratitude to all the artists who journeyed to Antwerp to witness the exhibitions of the PCU Drawing and Photo Contest during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 25th PCU Games.

Looking ahead, the PCU Committee eagerly anticipates presenting participation details for the 2024 Bridge and Chess events, along with updates on PCU Tennis, where we are evaluating two potential hosting candidates.

ETS Montreal (Quebec, Canada) wins Enrico Prandi Trophy!

During the 2024 PCU Games Closing Ceremony, ETS Montreal (Canada) was awarded by Gert Christens of AP with the Enrico Prandi Trophy! After every match the referees awarded Fair Play points to each team based upon conduct of the delegation and Fair Play on the field. The winner of the Fair Play ranking receives the Enrico Prandi Trophy, a prestigious award, unique in the world of university sport and the highest merit a university can achieve in relation to ethics in university sport. Enrico Prandi, born on May 21, 1945 (Italy), is the Past President of Panathlon International, former member of the International Olympic Committee Cultural Commission and former President of the Italian Basketball League. In 2010 he initiated the idea to create a university platform within Panathlon International to promote ethics in sport also within the worldwide university community.

During the Closing Ceremony of the 2024 PCU Games, Prof. Dr. Francis Baron Van Loon was recognized for his outstanding contributions to university sports. Nils Van de Velden, President of Panathlon Antwerp, presented him with the prestigious Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality Award. Prof. Van Loon’s dedication to promoting university sports is exemplified through his roles as Rector of the University of Antwerp, President of the Antwerp Association of Student Sport, Chairman of two FISU World University Championships, and member of the Executive Board of the PCU Committee.

25th PCU General Assembly, Peter Verboven re-elected for a new term as PCU Committee President

The 25th Ordinary and Elective General Assembly of the PCU Committee, under the authority and approval of Panathlon International, has endorsed the 2023 Executive Board report, ratified the 2024 Agenda, and approved the financial reports for 2023 and 2024. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Francis Baron Van Loon, serving as Executive Board member, Prof. Dr. Gabriel Kotchofa, fulfilling the role of PCU Committee Secretary General & Treasurer, and Peter Verboven, holding the position of PCU Committee President, have been re-elected to serve another term of four years.

Prof. Dr. Bahram Ghadimi (President PCU Games Council) and Simona Callo (Panathlon International Secretary General) were not up for re-election and remain installed at the PCU Committee Executive Board.

All PCU Games delegations are invited to join us for the General Assembly, followed by a Sandwich Buffet today at 19.00h at the AP Campus Lange Nieuwstraat. The agenda includes crucial PCU Committee mandate proposals for the next four years and presentations of the candidates for the upcoming June 2024 Presidency elections of the PCU Committee governing body Panathlon International. Attendance is highly encouraged as it contributes to Panathlon International’s commitment to inclusive decision-making also on a university level. The Panathlon family values the input and participation of all delegations in shaping our collective future.

In addition all PCU Games delegations are welcome to join us for the 2024 PCU Games Closing Ceremony tonight at 20.30h, held at the AP Campus Lange Nieuwstraat. This ceremony promises to shine a spotlight on Panathlon International’s values of fair play, both within society and the university community. Highlights include the presentation of the prestigious Enrico Prandi Award to a PCU Games participant and the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality Award, which will be bestowed upon Francis Baron Van Loon. We extend a warm welcome to all delegations to be part of this memorable event.

Besides the presentation of the Enrico Prandi Trophy, every delegation participating in the PCU Games will be honored with a Participation Certificate, a Panathlon Emblem, and a distinctive gift connected to Antwerp during the Closing Ceremony.

2024 PCU Futsal, impressive line-up of 22 teams

2024 PCU Futsal witnesses a remarkable surge in participation, boasting an impressive lineup of 22 teams, including 16 men’s and 6 women’s teams. This achievement marks a new participation record since the PCU Games debuted in Antwerp back in 2015. Encouraged by this success, the PCU Committee is now contemplating expanding to additional Futsal venues to accommodate the growing interest from universities worldwide. Teams hailing from Albania, Kosovo, Belgium, Serbia, Canada, Scotland, Czech Republic, Italy and Germany underscore the event’s international appeal, fostering an environment of camaraderie and fair play.
