Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality 2022 awarded to Benjamin Gérard from Rising You

March 2, 2023/in Panathlon Antwerp

The Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality 2022 trophy was solemnly presented to Benjamin Gérard by Antwerp Alderman for Sports Peter Wouters.

Benjamin Gérard is founder and coordinator of climbing club Rising You, which facilitates the integration of refugees through sports, training and guidance towards work. The club uses sport to teach important attitudes: working together, paying attention to safety, taking the lead, and learning and practicing Dutch.

In addition to a sports club, Rising You offers various practical training courses. These are intended for refugees who have only been to school for a short time in their country of origin. Among other things, they are trained as telecom technicians. The organization Rising You in Antwerp has provided 325 refugees with a job in 5 years.

During the interview with Dr. Jan Verstuyft, the climbing club’s coach Abbas Heidari was also invited to the stage.
He talked about his way from being a refugee to working as a coach at the club. It was climbing training that helped him learn Dutch, integrate and get a job.

February 27, 2023/in PCU Clubs news, University of Antwerp

As per annual tradition, the Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon Award is presented to one of the three nominated UAntwerp top sports students for their meritorious sports achievements in combination with their studies.
UAntwerp has 128 top sports students this academic year: 59 men and 69 women. Three female athletes were nominated for the PCU Antwerp Sports Personalities 2022.

Tineke den Dulk has been voted PCU Antwerp Sports Personality of the year 2022 at the University of Antwerp.

The Belgian top athlete of Dutch origin studies Film and Visual Culture sciences at the University of Antwerp. In 2022 she became Belgian Champion on the 500, 1000 and 1500 meters.
“This prize from the UAntwerp is a reward for my many sacrifices. My parents came especially from the Netherlands for the ceremony, but there will not be much celebrating,” says den Dulk. “Because tomorrow morning I just have to be back on the skating rink.”

The other nominees were breakdancer Camine Van Hoof, who graduated in philosophy in 2022, and sailor Eline Verstraelen, student of applied economics. All of them were interviewed by Dr. Jan Verstuyft.

PCU Chess 2021 in Antwerp

December 3, 2021/in Chess Cup

Taking into account the tightening of Anti-Covid-19 measures in Belgium, fortunately we are still able to host the PCU Chess Cup 2021 on venue. Competitions will take place from 3 to 5 December in University of Antwerp “Hof van Liere”.
In the program:
♟Friday 3 December: Accreditations, Expositions, Opening Ceremony and University of Antwerp Blitz Tournament (open to all players).
♟Saturday 4 December: Competitions of 5 rounds, lunch and dinner.
♟Sunday 5 December: Competitions & Finals (round 6 and 7), Honouring Ceremony and lunch.
❗Some changes to the basic program were made to provide Covid Safe environment.

Specifical measures to the PCU Chess Cup 2021:
✅ Washing of hands at the entrance.
✅ Scan of Covid Safe Ticket / European Corona Certificate at entrance each day
✅ Wearing of mouth masks inside is mandatory during the event. Also during the games, as you are in close proximity to your opponent. Exception is made when a safe distance of 1,5m can be taken: the ‘rest area’ where you can go for a drink between matches has a ‘safe setup’ with only 2p per table so you can sit there without mouth masks.
✅ Make sure you have your mouth mask with you at all times in Belgium.
We’re looking forward to welcome all participants in Antwerp in accordance with Covid Safe conditions.
