Dear friends,

The foundation and growth of the Committee of Panathlon Club of Universities (PCU) can’t be seen separately from the evolution of sport at the University of Antwerp. The “new” University of Antwerp  was established in 2003 as the result of a merger of 3 former institutes of higher education in Antwerp.

The beginning of this new university was an ideal opportunity to start a new organization of the sport activities. Sport has always be seen as an valuable instrument to develop international interaction and experience with emphasis on fair play and university friendship.

Ten years ago in 2011, it was an wonderful opportunity  to include these activities in Panathlon. As an international organization dedicated within the Olympic Movement to ethics in sport, Panathlon was the excellent environment to develop the international sport competitions of the UAntwerpen. PCU was born!

Thanks to Panathlon the international embedding of the PCU-activities is secured for the future. We are delighted with this collaboration.

I wish PCU all the best for the next decade! Congratulations!

Prof. Francis Baron Van Loon

PCU Committee President’s message for the 10th Anniversary

Dear Panathlon friends,

I’m honored and pleased to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the PCU Committee in a world finally rising up again after the pandemic that impacted all of us. But even in the background of this tragic event, the PCU Committee continued its growth as the university sport oriented platform of Panathlon International, organizing and endorsing university sport events with the focus on fair play and ethics in student sport.

With the introduction of an extended interactive online platform the last 2 years, we managed to reach out to students worldwide at a moment that the organization of live sport events was impossible in most parts of the world. The combination of our efforts on venue and online, resulted in 2020 in a membership and network membership of 299 universities and university colleges in 85 countries. Figures that make me proud and humble. Consequently, the PCU Committee is proud to express gratefulness to all students and university sport professionals that share our values as an active participant in one of our many events.

In 1999 the basis of the PCU Committee was established as an independent initiative of Belgian and Dutch students, the “European Student Football Championship”. Over the years the number of sports was extended and the initiative was incorporated in the non-profit association IFIUS. In 2011, the association became part of Panathlon International and the initiative was welcomed by the 2011 President of the International Olympic Committee J. Rogge. Today the PCU Committee is a respected part of the Panathlon movement with activities and events for students, universities and university colleges worldwide, in an area that makes a difference: Student Fair Play and Ethics in University Sport.

It is symbolic that on our 10th anniversary, we are able to organize our first live events again since 2019, the PCU Bridge Trophy 2021 in October and the PCU Chess Cup 2021 in December. This development strengthens our believe that soon all our activities and events will be organized in normal circumstances in a world looking forward again.

Finally, on behalf of the PCU Committee Executive Board, I wish to thank all persons and organizations that contributed to the success of the PCU Committee these last 10 years, especially and foremost Panathlon International and its past and current Presidents, Enrico Prandi, Giacomo Santini and Pierre Zappelli.

Best personal regards,

Peter Verboven

Dear Friends

it is with great pleasure that I join all of you to bring my greetings and those of Panathlon International on this occasion.

Ten years have passed since Panathlon International, with a resolution of the International Board, has authorized the establishment of the Committee of Panathlon Clubs of Universities (PCU). A choice to support and disseminate the principles of our Association through sport and art within the large international student community.

Many initiatives have been carried out in these years to promote our values: from the International University Games, to Trophies, to Graphic and Photographic Competitions. A very lively, active, and dynamic activity that has also led to an excellent synergy between Panathlon International and the University of Antwerp.
The University has also hosted several Assemblies and Congresses of Panathlon International, a path full of initiatives and commitment to convey the values in which we believe, education, fair play, moral training in sports and civil life.

Even in this juncture, during which the Pandemic has dictated its rules, you have shown to be determined and close to young people, maintaining the activity and communication and at the same time promoting remote actions.

Now we must look to the future. Each of us, regardless of organizational roles, must contribute to the growth of our Association, transforming into concrete actions our purposes and trying to become protagonists on the territory of the values that inspire us. After this period we need it even more! Times change and require more and more commitment, dedication, and passion, but these are characteristics that we sportsmen know well and that do not discourage us.

Long live Panathlon International and the Clubs of Universities!

With the cordial appreciation and affectionate wish of the entire International Board, I wish you a happy anniversary!

10 years PCU Committee #BeActive Day

September 30, 2021/in PCU Committee news

To celebrate our 10th anniversary during the European Week of Sport with theme “Healthy lifestyle for all” we decided to organize “10 years PCU Committee #BeActive Day” with sports activities and games for the team of our PCU Committee office together with the University of Antwerp. We tried playing the new Spikeball game. The team liked the activity so much that we decided to arrange such activities more often to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
We call on all people in Europe to Be Active!

Panathlon International  – 70 Years of Ethics in Sport

June 11, 2021/in Panathlon news

Message from the President – Happy Anniversary!

On 12th June 1951, in Venice, Mario Viali and a small group of enlightened and visionary friends, all keen on sport and peace, founded Panathlon, originally called Disnar Sport, a Venetian expression recalling friendliness through sport.

Then our motto “ludis iungit” was adopted , expressing the idea that we are united by and for the benefit of sport. Panathlon developed rapidly, at first in its country of origin, then in neighbouring Switzerland and, later on, in other European countries and, since 1967, in the Americas, thus gaining a true international dimension.

As of today, our footprint spans over 4 continents, with its 263 clubs in 27 countries and its 8,786 panathletes who are perpetuating the ideals cherished by our founding fathers.

These include the promotion of “clean” sporting practice, of sport in line with the ethical principles held dear by Pierre de Coubertin, i.e. access to all, irrespective of age, race, sex or physical and mental ability.

Our efforts to educate young people, by our example and our teaching, to spread the principles of Fair Play and to raise awareness of sport ethics led us to be formally recognized by the IOC that, in 1982, welcomed us into the Olympic Family.

A scenario of heightened competitiveness, harsh economic and financial stakes, physical and moral devastation caused by doping, and criminal misdeeds, including match-fixing, bribery and corruption, makes it essential to have active and militant organisations that stand up to pursue ethical and moral values.

It is Panathlon International’s ambition to fulfil this role, to the best of its ability, in the world of sport.

We have been present on the ground for 70 years with our Charters, our international projects and, of course, with the action of our Clubs.

Everywhere our Clubs, united by same ideal, organise meetings, surveys and workshops, and award prizes and scholarships to individuals who excel in sport and at school in promoting correctness and fair play values.

Panathlon International continues to grow and is becoming ever more impactful all over the world. Its role is increasingly recognised by sporting organisations, as well as by public institutions that are willing to promote health through sport.

Docked in Rapallo, the international seat of our Movement, we are becoming ever more globalised also thanks to our representations and offices in Lausanne, the capital city of sport in Switzerland, and in Brussels, Belgium, at the European institutions.

This 12th June 2021 coincides with the end of a public health crisis that has had devastating effects on health and economy. On-line meetings have made it possible for us to continue to work, although they cannot fully replace in-person meetings. Panathlon also means friendship, mutual understanding out of a smile, a wink or a hug.

Driven by the strongest motivation ever, we are proud to celebrate 70 years of enduring efforts to disseminate the values of sport and their contribution to peace and understanding between peoples.

Pierre Zappelli
