Press release

The PCU International University Tennis Tournament unites students from different parts of the world to promote the Olympic principle of Fair Play and Universal Friendship

From October 18 to October 20, the IV PCU International University Tennis Tournament will be held in Moscow to promote Olympic principles of Fair Play and Universal Friendship. The PCU International University Tennis Tournament (PIUTT) is a yearly tennis tournament organized by the University of Antwerp (Belgium), Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation and Dubna State University (Russia) and endorsed by the Panathlon Clubs of Universities (PCU Committee). Panathlon International is recognized by the International Olympic Committee and is the global leader of sport ethics.

This year the tournament is hosted by the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, the winner of the PIUTT competitions last year. The Financial University is one of the leading Russian higher education institutions, which celebrated its centenary in March this year. The Financial University is a member of the Panathlon Club of Universities (PCU) network, as a repeated participant and champion of the University Games in Antwerp. The successful participation of students in PCU sport competitions encouraged the partnerships between two universities – members of the Panathlon network – the University of Antwerp and the Financial University.

The main objective of the PIUTT is to offer students a platform where tennis is considered as a valuable instrument to develop international interaction and experience, with emphasis on Fair Play and Universal Friendship. The uniqueness of the tournament is that students have the opportunity not only to participate in tennis competitions and in the tournament program, but also to become part of the Fair Play movement to promote the idea of Fair Play, the Olympic principles of solidarity and friendship, as well as gain experience of international interaction in sports. In order to support university sports, the organizers provide for all players a Free Games Package, including participation in the sports and cultural program of the tournament, accommodation, meals and local transport.

Students from Algeria, Belgium, UK, Ghana, Russia, Rwanda, Slovenia, South Africa, as well as students representing universities of the Commonwealth of Dominica and the USA are announced to participate in the tournament.

Tennis competitions in the men’s and women’s singles will be held at the CSKA Tennis Palace, located on Leningradsky Prospekt, 39, 12a, Moscow. Within the two days of the competition, 48 matches will be held, consisting of one set with a tie-break .  In total, 24 players will compete: 16 man and 8 ladies. Entrance to the competition is free on Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21 from 9.00 to 18.00.

Tournament participants and visitors will be able to get acquainted with the basic principles of the Olympic movement and the activities of Panathlon International clubs, take part in the photo contest and prize drawing from the University of Antwerp. At the opening ceremony an exposition of artworks made by students from all over the world and devoted to youth sports and the Olympic Movement will be presented in the hall of the Financial University. The best 15 drawings have already been exhibited at key Panathlon International events in Belgium, Italy and Argentina. The annual Drawing Contest is also open for students from universities and university colleges worldwide.

Thus, the PIUTT tournament is a unique platform that blends sports, education and culture in its program, which is a fundamental principle of Olympism.
