International Day of Friendship
30 July

July 30, 2022/in Fair Play, PCU Games

Sharing the human spirit through friendship

Our world faces many challenges, crises and forces of division — such as poverty, violence, and human rights abuses — among many others — that undermine peace, security, development and social harmony among the world’s peoples.

To confront those crises and challenges, their root causes must be addressed by promoting and defending a shared spirit of human solidarity that takes many forms — the simplest of which is friendship.

Through friendship — by accumulating bonds of camaraderie and developing strong ties of trust — we can contribute to the fundamental shifts that are urgently needed to achieve lasting stability, weave a safety net that will protect us all, and generate passion for a better world where all are united for the greater good.

Background

The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.

The resolution places emphasis on involving young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity.

To mark the International Day of Friendship the UN encourages governments, international organizations and civil society groups to hold events, activities and initiatives that contribute to the efforts of the international community towards promoting a dialogue among civilizations, solidarity, mutual understanding and reconciliation.

The International Day of Friendship is an initiative that follows on the proposal made by UNESCO defining the Culture of Peace as a set of values, attitudes and behaviours that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems. It was then adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997.

Enrico Prandi Fair Play Trophy 2022

May 3, 2022/in Fair Play, PCU Games

The University of Sussex (England, UK) is the winner of the Enrico Prandi Fair Play Trophy 2022.

The Enrico Prandi Trophy, a prestigious award, unique in the world of university sport and the highest merit a university can achieve in relation to ethics in university sport.

After every match of the PCU Games the referees award Fair Play points to each team based upon conduct of the delegation and Fair Play on the field. The winner of the Fair Play ranking receives the Enrico Prandi Trophy.

The basketball and volleyball teams of the University of Sussex were so friendly to support another team from England (University of Keele) and a team from Rwanda (INES Ruhengeri) when they needed replacement players due to injuries and late arrivels. What a great example of Fair Play and Universal Friendship!

This is the second time the University of Sussex has received the Fair Play Trophy. The first time the Men’s Basketball team received it in 2017. And for the fourth time the Enrico Prandi Trophy goes to England. Congratulations!

PCU Games 2022: Day 1 Competitions

April 29, 2022/in PCU Games

The Futsal Women’s day started with a serious statement by the Futsal Women of the University of Edinburgh. They’ve won their first game against Keele University with 19-0! However the team of Keele managed to score a goal in the games against the Estonian Business School and the University of Antwerp. The last University is the one to beat for Edinburgh. So far they didn’t succeed in that as their final game of the day ended in a draw.

The Futsal Men’s day started with a brutal match between Scotland and Albania. Kuwait persevered over the Belgian students of Karel de Grote. The following team of Germany’s Bonn University couldn’t make a dent in the Bulgarian offensive. Antwerp and Kossovo were the next on schedule and were found to be each other’s match. Afterwards the University of Edinburgh defeated the strong Kuwait team. Despite their brave efforts Karel de Grote students couldn’t hold against Albania’s might. Next up were the Belgian University of Antwerp students who beat Germany with a decisive victory. The final uncontested winners of the day were Bulgaria’s students who beat Kossovo. And so a fine day of futsal competitions was concluded.

The Basketball competitions went very smoothly. All teams arrived on time and participated in the competitions.
There was great support for team of INES Ruhengeri. When they had their first score against team from the University of Antwerp, everybody cheered. This team had some issues with too many girls injured. So players from the University of Sussex kindly agreed to replace Rwanda players. We consider this as an act of Fair Play and Universal Friendship.
There were some really exciting matches, especially between the Men’s teams.

The Volleyball competitions started on Thursday with 7 women en 8 men matches between teams of Kuwait, Luxembourg, England, Belgium, Czech Republic and Germany. The day ended with a very thrilling match between the women team of the University of Antwerp and University of Economics and Business in Prague.
