PIUTT Organizing Committee meeting

On 14 April 2017 PIUTT Organization Committee (POC) meeting took place in Antwerp.

 

The members of the POC: Baron Francis Van Loon, Dmitry Fursaev and Peter Verboven, met to discuss about PIUTT 2017 and possibilities of further cooperation between Dubna State University and Antwerp University. They agreed on the new competition format and official program of the 2017 Tennis Tournament. Updated information is already available on the PIUTT Page of this website.

 

Dubna University rector Mr.Fursaev during his stay in Anwerp has visited Campuses of Antwerp University. Mr.Fursaev expressed his admiration for the University and the City of Antwerp.

PCU Antwerp Sports Personality Award

Yesterday (February 14th) the PCU Antwerp (Belgium) awarded its yearly Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon-award to the ‘best’ University of Antwerp topsport student.

Three of the four nominees were 2016 Olympic Participants (swimmers Kimberly Buys and Basten Caerts and 800m-runner Renée Eykens), while the fourth nominee (Arthur De Sloover) is a member of the Belgium U-21 hockey team, who took home the silver medal at the recent World Championships.

After introductions and a keynote speech by sport psychologist Jef Brouwers, the winner – based on voted cast by University of Antwerp students – was announced to be Renée Eykens, bachelor-student kinesitherapy, who reached the semi-finals of the 800m Women at last year’s Rio Olympic Games.

Furthermore the PCU Antwerp International Sports Personality was awarded to Dutch former speed skater Marianne Timmer, for creating a motivational online sports platform for children (called Gympie).

Finally sister club Panathlon Antwerp awarded its yearly Sports Personality Award to Paul Vermeiren (Archery 4th place at the 1996 Olympics) for his initiatives to promote his sport in Antwerp and Belgium.

Program Panathlon International 20th Congress in Antwerp

The annual Panathlon International Congress is this year organised in Antwerp by the Panathlon Club of the University of Antwerp. The subject of the congress is “Ethics and Governance in Sport: Are we committed to change?”. In addition an Extraordinary General Assembly is convened to vote on a number of amendements to the statutes of Panathlon International. Finally, the Elective General Assembly will appoint a new Panathlon International President and a new Executive Board.

 

Panathlon Clubs of Universities and their members with questions, who are already participating or willing to participate in one of the 3 events can direct themselves to info@pcucommittee.com for more information.

University of Antwerp Student Sports Council Gala Night

May 12, 2016, the University of Antwerp Student Sports Council wrapped up the academic sports year with a Gala Night. Fifteen awards were given to the winners of 7 year long competitions, as well as some individual awards. The pool allotment for next year was drawn and two important Panathlon Fair Play prizes were awarded by PCU Antwerp President Dirk Van Oosterwijck. A reception and free beer for all participating students rounded up the night.

Final of the 15th Antwerp Students League

May 2, 2016 in the Stadion of the oldest football club in Belgium, Royal Antwerp FC, the final of the 15th Antwerp Students League was held, a football competition (11 vs 11) for Antwerp Student Unions containing mixed teams (min. 2 girls on each team). This year’s Cup was won by Sofia (Student Union of the University of Antwerp, Faculty of Law), after 9 consecutive title for Wikings-NSK (Student Union of the University of Antwerp, Faculty of Economics).

 

The match, vs. the Faculty of Bio Sciences, was attended by around 600 students and ended in a thrilling penalty shoot-out, after the score was 2 – 2. The Cup was awarded to Sofia by Mayor of Sports Ludo Van Campenhout.

 

A Fair Play award for the tournament will be awarded next week, in cooperation with PCU Antwerp during a special ceremony at the University of Antwerp, Grauwzusters Cloister.

PCU Antwerp Sports Personalities 2015

Many panathletes and candidate members were represented in our yearly sports-personality evening, hosted at the University of Antwerp.

This yearly traditional evening symbolized innovation and a joint venture between the two Antwerp clubs (Panathlon Antwerp – PCU). A refreshment of hospitality with promo around upcoming Panathlon events.

Tom Melis, international tennis referee and experienced practitioner gave a brief summery about the role of a good youth academy and the commercialization of tennis sport.

Two awards were contributed :

– Ere Rector Francis Van Loon Student Sports Trophee: Félix Denayer
– Panathlon Antwerp Sports personality 2015: Johan Van Herck

The crowd was very thrilled about this sports meet-up and hope for more joint venture projects between the two clubs, as the panathlon credo always declares “ Ludis Iungit “. The two Antwerp presidents gave a big thanks for all volunteers which created this wonderful team spirit sport-show !
