PCU Antwerp Sports Personality Awards

On February 18 in Antwerp the yearly Panathlon & PCU Antwerp Sports Personality Awards were awarded.
Winner of the Panathlon Fair Play Award was Gert Vande Broek, coach of the Belgian National Volleyball Women team.
As each year three UAntwerp student-athletes were nomited for the “Francis Van Loon” award. The award was won by Ju Jitsu-star Marion Decrop. Other nominees were Sebastien De Meulemeester (Swimming) and Lise Jaques (Badminton). The award is ment to highlight all the hard work spent by student-athletes combining their studies and their sports.

Panathlon Antwerp meeting

On the Panathlon Antwerp meeting was devoted to the celebration next year (2020) of 100 years Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. In Antwerp for the first time the Olympic Oath was taken and the first Olympic flag was presented at the 1920 Summer Olympics. The alderman of sports of Antwerp Ludo Van Campenhout gave away some interesting events the Stad Antwerpen will organise next year within the framework of the celebration.

Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personalities 2018

Awarding ceremony of the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personalities 2018 took place yesterday, 19 February 2019 in the beautiful Grauwzusters Cloister of the University of Antwerp.

The winner of the Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon award as top sport student of the University of Antwerp is Arthur De Sloover, 2018 World Champion, Belgian field hockey player, who plays as a defender for the Belgium national team Red Lions.

Michel Pradolini is honored the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality 2018 award for his exceptional work as chairman at the SC City Pirates Antwerp and valuable contribution to ethics in sport.

Following the award ceremony, the alderman of sports of Antwerp Ludo Van Campenhout congratulated the winners and nominees.

PCU Antwerp meeting

Yesterday, 6 December 2018, the last Panathlon Antwerp meeting of this year took place in the University of Antwerp Club.

 

Thanks to the guest speaker Michel Pradolini it was a fascinating evening. The many social commitments of the City Pirates led by Michel are impressive and an example for others.

 

Following this successful evening it was concluded that Michel Pradolini is more than deserved the Panathlon Antwerp laureate of the Sports Personalities 2018 that takes place on 19 February 2019 at the Grauwzuster Campus of the University of Antwerp.

Panathlon Antwerp Golf Initiation took place yesterday in the Golfclub Three Oaks. The Panathlon members and guests had the opportunity to try all the aspects of the game.

Following the Golf Initiation there was a dinner with guest speaker Pieter Smets, he was talking about the ‘Social sporting practices’.

Panathlon Antwerp Sport Personalities 2017 report

The yearly Sports Personalities evening was traditionally held at the University of Antwerp on February 15, 2018.

The ceremony started with Welcome words by Luc Verguts, Panathlon Antwerp President, who stressed the importance of Ethics and Fair Play in sports. Then guest speaker, Willy Van Hove – famous Belgian announcer at a lot of Belgian running and athletics events – spoke about the magic of the marathon.

Five students of the University of Antwerp who successfully combine their studies with their sports career were nominated for the Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon Award 2017. University of Antwerp students jad voted in the previous weeks and out of five nominees Basten Caerts, Belgian swim champion and Social-Economic Sciences student who broke no less than 7 Belgian records in 2017, was awarded the trophy.

The Panathlon Antwerp Sport Personality Award 2017 has been presented to
Hanna Mariën, former sprinter and bobsledder (gold 4x100m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 6th place two-man bobsleigh at the 2014 Sochi Olympics) for the valuable contribution she has made to Ethics in Sports during her active career and afterwards.

A special addition to the Sport Personality awards ceremony was the first exposition of the 15 selected art works of the PCU Drawing Contest 2017, which the guests were able to see before the selection of the three winners.

PCU Antwerp Sports Personality Award

Yesterday (February 14th) the PCU Antwerp (Belgium) awarded its yearly Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon-award to the ‘best’ University of Antwerp topsport student.

Three of the four nominees were 2016 Olympic Participants (swimmers Kimberly Buys and Basten Caerts and 800m-runner Renée Eykens), while the fourth nominee (Arthur De Sloover) is a member of the Belgium U-21 hockey team, who took home the silver medal at the recent World Championships.

After introductions and a keynote speech by sport psychologist Jef Brouwers, the winner – based on voted cast by University of Antwerp students – was announced to be Renée Eykens, bachelor-student kinesitherapy, who reached the semi-finals of the 800m Women at last year’s Rio Olympic Games.

Furthermore the PCU Antwerp International Sports Personality was awarded to Dutch former speed skater Marianne Timmer, for creating a motivational online sports platform for children (called Gympie).

Finally sister club Panathlon Antwerp awarded its yearly Sports Personality Award to Paul Vermeiren (Archery 4th place at the 1996 Olympics) for his initiatives to promote his sport in Antwerp and Belgium.

Program Panathlon International 20th Congress in Antwerp

The annual Panathlon International Congress is this year organised in Antwerp by the Panathlon Club of the University of Antwerp. The subject of the congress is “Ethics and Governance in Sport: Are we committed to change?”. In addition an Extraordinary General Assembly is convened to vote on a number of amendements to the statutes of Panathlon International. Finally, the Elective General Assembly will appoint a new Panathlon International President and a new Executive Board.

University of Antwerp Student Sports Council Gala Night

May 12, 2016, the University of Antwerp Student Sports Council wrapped up the academic sports year with a Gala Night. Fifteen awards were given to the winners of 7 year long competitions, as well as some individual awards. The pool allotment for next year was drawn and two important Panathlon Fair Play prizes were awarded by PCU Antwerp President Dirk Van Oosterwijck. A reception and free beer for all participating students rounded up the night.
