PANATHLON ANTWERP & PCU ANTWERP SPORTS PERSONALITY 2021

On Monday, February 21, the awarding ceremony of the Sports Personalities 2021 took place at the Grauvzuster Chapel of the University of Antwerp. During this awarding, the UAntwerp top sports student of the year 2021 was announced and the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personalities 2021 were put in the spotlight.

TOP SPORT STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2021

The title of PCU Antwerp Sports Personality traditionally goes to the UAntwerp top sports student of the year.  The winner receive the prestigious Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon Award. This year three students were nominated: Mathijn Bogaert (BMX – Applied Engineering Sciences), Michelle Struijk (Hockey – Medicine) and Jef Vandorpe (Wheelchair tennis – Law).  They know how to successfully combine their top sport career with their studies.

Jef Vandorpe eventually got the most votes and was elected UAntwerp top sports student of the year 2021.

PANATHLON ANTWERP SPORTS PERSONALITY 2021

After the PCU Antwerp Sports Personality 2021 was announced, it was the turn of the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personalities 2021. Exceptionally, three laureates were chosen, namely the UAntwerp members of the national men’s hockey team “Red Lions”: alumni Félix Denayer and Alexander Hendrickx, and student Arthur De Sloover were honored for their inspiring role in the Antwerp sports. They crowned their work in 2021 by conquering the Olympic title in Tokio. Arthur, Félix and Alexander explained more about their (Olympic) hockey experiences during an interview with Dr. Jan Verstuyft. The awards were presented by Rector Herman Van Goethem.

Afterwards, there was a reception and the opportunity to take pictures with the topsport  athletes and the Olympic gold medals of Arthur and Félix.

Who will be the top sport student of the year 2021?

The presentation of the Panathlon Antwerp & PCU Antwerp Sports Personalities 2021 will take place on 21 February 2022.

Out of more than 100 University of Antwerp top sports students, three students were nominated. They managed to successfully combine their studies with sport career. These are the three nominated students who have a chance to win the prestigious Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon Award:

• Mathijn Bogaert: Cycling, BMX
• Michelle Struijk: Hockey
• Jef Vandorpe: Tennis – Wheelchair tennis

In addition, the laureate of the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality 2021 will be honored. This year there are no fewer than three laureates, the UAntwerp members of the national men’s hockey team “Red Lions”:

International audio-video competition “Sport as Promotion of Human Rights”: Last Call

We would like to inform you that there are two weeks left to submit your sport video to the International audio-video competition “Sport as Promotion of Human Rights”.

The Panathlon International Cultural Foundation “Domenico Chiesa” and the FICTS – Fédération Internationale Cinéma Télévision Sportifs (123 affiliated nations) organize an international audio-video competition, with free registration, on the theme “Sport as Promotion of Human Rights”.

Filmmakers, new media, professionals and independents, etc. can participate with videos of a maximum duration of 4 minutes in any format and technique of any genre (fiction, animation, documentaries, etc.).

The aim of the competition is to promote quality in sport images that promote the values of Panathlon’s Movement, highlight its ideals and spirit and enhance Panathlon’s universal commitment to culture through sport as an education tool leading to social change.

The FICTS – for its part – intends to enhance and promote the short film as an original expressive form, to encourage the creativity by offering greater visibility through sport.

The Jury composed of three representatives of the Panathlon International Cultural Foundation “Domenico Chiesa” and three of the FICTS will evaluate the 20 selected works and assign – for the three winning videos – prizes for a total of € 6,000.

The PCU Antwerp is represented in thecSelection process by Alina Baranova, who will be also a PCU Clubs’ contact person for the PI – Domenico Chiesa Cultural Foundation.  

The “Award Ceremony” will take place in Milan on November 14 on the occasion of “SPORT MOVIES & TV 2021”, Final of the “World FICTS Challenge” (20 Festivals in 5 Continents) World Championship of Television, Cinema, Communication and Sports culture scheduled from 9 to 14 November.

The participants’ works will be available online on the SPORTMOVIESTV.COM platform, as well as on the Social Media Channels of Panathlon International (and individual Clubs) and FICTS.

Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality 2020 awarded

The Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality 2020 is awarded posthumously to Prof. Dr. Alain Verschoren, honorary rector of the University of Antwerp. The laureate received this title for his commitment and great contribution to university sport. Alain Verschoren was not only extremely popular within the University of Antwerp, he was also a prominent member of the Panathlon International family. Alain Verschoren was, as Chairman of the University of Antwerp & Panathlon Drawing and Photo Contests, an eminent ambassador of fair play in university sport. The award was received by his wife, Lin Van de Cruys.

PCU Antwerp Sports Personality 2020

On 16 February in Antwerp the yearly Panathlon & PCU Antwerp Sports Personality Awards were awarded.
As each year three UAntwerp student-athletes were nomited for the “Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon Award”. The award was won judoka Lien Meeuwssen. Other nominees were Laura Puyten (Equestrian – Dressage) and Steven Pattyn (Cycling – Road). The award is ment to highlight all the hard work spent by student-athletes combining their studies and their sports. As the event could not take place in physical form, the winner was announced through video below.

PCU Antwerp Sport personalities 2020 Awards

This year, the award ceremony of the Panathlon Antwerp & PCU Antwerp Sports Personalities will be held online. The Honorary Rector Francis baron Van Loon Award, will be handed out to one of the three nominated elite athletes who study at the University of Antwerp:
– Laura Luyten (equestrianism, dressage)
– Lien Meeuwssen (judo, -70kg)
– Steven Pattyn (cycling, road)
Find out on 16 February in the Facebook event who will be awarded as @UAntwerpen top sports student of the year 2020. In addition, Prof. Dr. Alain Verschoren, honorary rector of the University of Antwerp, posthumously awarded the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality 2020 trophy for the great contributions he has made to the student sports. On February 18 in Antwerp the yearly Panathlon & PCU Antwerp Sports Personality Awards were awarded.
Winner of the Panathlon Fair Play Award was Gert Vande Broek, coach of the Belgian National Volleyball Women team.
As each year three UAntwerp student-athletes were nomited for the “Francis Van Loon” award. The award was won by Ju Jitsu-star Marion Decrop. Other nominees were Sebastien De Meulemeester (Swimming) and Lise Jaques (Badminton). The award is ment to highlight all the hard work spent by student-athletes combining their studies and their sports.

Panathlon Antwerp meeting

On the Panathlon Antwerp meeting was devoted to the celebration next year (2020) of 100 years Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. In Antwerp for the first time the Olympic Oath was taken and the first Olympic flag was presented at the 1920 Summer Olympics. The alderman of sports of Antwerp Ludo Van Campenhout gave away some interesting events the Stad Antwerpen will organise next year within the framework of the celebration.

Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personalities 2018

Awarding ceremony of the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personalities 2018 took place yesterday, 19 February 2019 in the beautiful Grauwzusters Cloister of the University of Antwerp.

The winner of the Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon award as top sport student of the University of Antwerp is Arthur De Sloover, 2018 World Champion, Belgian field hockey player, who plays as a defender for the Belgium national team Red Lions.

Michel Pradolini is honored the Panathlon Antwerp Sports Personality 2018 award for his exceptional work as chairman at the SC City Pirates Antwerp and valuable contribution to ethics in sport.

Following the award ceremony, the alderman of sports of Antwerp Ludo Van Campenhout congratulated the winners and nominees.
