On Friday night October 19th at the Olympus Sport Complex of the Dubna State University the Opening Ceremony of the 3rd edition of the PCU International University Tennis Tournament (PIUTT) took place.
After welcoming words by representatives of the Host University (Dubna State University) and of the Host City Dubna, the tournament was officialy declared open by Prof. Dr. Francis baron Van Loon, Honorary Rector of the University of Antwerp and President of the PIUTT Organizing Committee. Afterwards, the draw for the competitions was held: all 16 players (8 men and 8 women) were drawn in 2 groups per gender.
All players (representing 6 universities from 3 countries, and representing 6 nations) were invited to the stage for the yearly Parade of the Players. Referee and player representatives took the oath to participate and officiate the PIUTT in the spirit of Fair Play and Sportmanship.
The official student hymn “Gaudeamus Igitur” and a beautiful saxophone performance by a Dubna State University student ended the official part of the Opening Ceremony, after which all players, delegation members, guests, volunteers and members of the organization enjoyed a light dinner together.
Also, during the Opening Ceremony, the exposition of the Antwerp University and Panathlon Drawing Contest 2017, devoted to University Sport and Olympic principals, was set up. During the Opening Ceremony a voting round for the “Honorable Commendation of the PIUTT 2018 Participants” was organized. After the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, the winner will be known!
The exposition of the 2nd Antwerp University and Panathlon Drawing Contest was held together with the 15th International Graphic Art Competition PI – Domenico Chiesa Foundation. The artworks were exposed in the Palagio dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa, a historical building in Florence, central Italy. The exposition Inauguration was made on 15 June 2018 during the 21st Panathlon International Congress by the Chairman of the Selection Commission, Prof. Dr. Alain Verschoren of the University of Antwerp. On 16 June 2018 the drawings were also presented to the members of the Panathlon International General Assembly. During the Congress and General Assembly the voting for the Honourable Commendation of the Panathlon Congress and General Assembly was organised. By a considerable majority vote, the drawing «Fair Play Volley» made by Marcos Santos Magnani da Silva from Brazil was chosen.

The 21st International Congress “Education in and through sport – Connecting values, physical literacy and wellbeing” and the 48th General Assembly of Panathlon International will take place on 15-17 June 2018 in Florence, Italy.
A PCU Committee delegation will attend the Congress. The exposition of the Antwerp University and Panathlon Drawing Contest will be held during the Panathlon International Congress in the Palagio dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa.

From 25 to 27 April 2018 during the PCU Games 2018, the exposition of the Antwerp University and Panathlon Drawing Contest 2017, devoted to University Sport and Olympic principals, was set up on two different campuses of the University of Antwerp (Antwerp, Belgium).
During the Opening Ceremony in the City Campus more than 450 participants had a chance to see the 15 best drawings and to vote for the “Honorable Commendation of the PCU Games 2018 Participants”.
The participants chose with an advantage of votes the drawing “The GREA_TEST” by Dmitry Shurygin from the Synergy University (Moscow, Russia). The drawings “Fair Play Handshake”, “Fair Play Volley” and “Friendship, Fun and Fair Play” were also strongly appreciated by the PCU Games participants.
During the Closing Ceremony on Friday 27 April the drawings were exhibited in the magnificent building of the University of Antwerp Grauwzusters Cloister, incorporating a unique atmosphere and a great history.

From 25 to 27 April 2018 the City of Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 19th PCU University Games, a yearly free sports and events program (futsal, basketball and volleyball) organized by the Antwerp University Association and endorsed by the PCU Committee to promote ethics in sport and principles of Fair Play and Universal friendship.
The PCU Games are held as a part of the Panathlon International Movement for the promotion and spread of culture and sporting ethics, according to the official recognition of the International Olympic Committee from 1982.
On April 25, at the PCU Games Opening Ceremony, the 300+ international participants were welcomed by Francis baron Van Loon, Honorary Rector of the University of Antwerp, Prof. Alain Verschoren, Prorector of the University of Antwerp and Paul Standaert, member of the International Board of Panathlon International. A student and referee representative took the oath of Fair Play and at the end of the Ceremony, PCU Games Council, President Dr. Bahram Ghadimi, declared the Games officially opened, after which delegation members were welcomed at the Welcoming Reception, while student participants attended the Welcome Party in student bar De Prof.
The Futsal Competition, held this year in 2 different sport centers, as 16 futsal teams competed at this year’s PCU Games.
The Futsal Men competition saw the Catalan National University Selection beat title-holders University of Antwerp (Belgium) in their opening game. In the end the AP University College was the Antwerp representative in the finals this year, after beating Financial University (Russia) in the semi’s. The other semi-final, attended by Panathlon International President Pierre Zappelli, was a tensely-fought duel, between the Selected Students of Iran (2016 champion) and the Catalan National University Selection, with the latter winning on penalties. In the final, the Catalan team had no mercy with AP University College, winning 9-2 to become the 2018 PCU Champions, while Iran took the bronze. Last year’s champions University of Antwerp won the Honorary Play-Off for 5th Place, while the Helmut Schmidt University (Germany) won the Consolidation Play-Off (11th Place).
The newly held Futsal Women competition saw as winners the University of Edinburgh (Scotland); beating the Catalan National University Selection in the finals. This came as a surprise, as the Catalans won the group game against Edinburgh. American University of Beirut (Lebanon) won the bronze medal game against home team Antwerp University Association.
The Basketball Competition, which saw 6 men team’s and 6 women’s teams compete for two titles, was held again at the Plantin Sports Center.
In the Basketball Men competition, the Juraj Dobrilla University of Pula (Croatia) beat 2016 champions Selected Students of Iran in their opening game, setting the stage for many very tight games in this competition. During the group phase, all teams won 1 game and lost 1 pool game, with rankings being decided on goal difference. In the final round, the Catalan National University Selection took the title, after beating host team Antwerp University Association in the semi-finals and beating Selected Students of Iran 62-60 in the final, a game they lost in the group phase. In the last minute, an injured Catalan player was attended to by Iranian opponents in an act of fair play. In the previous game Antwerp University Association had beat the American University of Beirut (Lebanon) for the bronze.
Basketball Women title holders University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy) lost their pool game against the American University of Beirut, but took home the bronze in the end. The final also was a tight game, with the Catalan National University Selection beating London South Bank University (England) 46-42.
The Volleyball Competition, hosted for the first time at Sports Center Wilrijkse Pleinen, welcomed 9 volleyball teams.
Five teams competed in the Volleyball Men round robin, with host team University of Antwerp winning all their games without a set lost. However, in the finals, played as a best-of-5 match, they unexpectedly lost 3-0 against the Catalan National University Selection, who took a 4th title of the PCU Games.
The Volleyball Women competition yielded an exciting final between host team Karel de Grote University College and the Catalan National University Selection, with the Antwerp team prevailing 3-1 in a best-of-five final, after having lost the group game the first day. The American University of Beirut took another bronze medal.
In an atmosphere of Fair Play and International Friendship, a common dinner was had by the participants on Thursday April 26th and group pictures with all participants were taken at each sports venue after the Honoring Ceremonies for each sport on Friday April 27th.
On Friday evening the PCU Committee General Assembly took place, after which the Closing Ceremony of the PCU Games 2018 was held. All participating Universities and University Colleges were awarded their certificate of participation, and the Enrico Prandi Trophy for Fair Play was awarded to London South Bank University (England). A small Closing Reception and then the Closing Party in De Prof for all participants marked an end to a successful edition of the PCU Games, with more than 450 accredited participants.

The exposition of the Antwerp University and Panathlon Drawing Contest 2017 took place on March 23rd 2018 during the prestigious Panathlon International event – Flambeau d’Or, in the “Capital of the Alpes”.
Impressive number of visitors attend the exposition in Grenoble as part of the Panathlon Flambeau D’Or awarding.
250 guests from France, Switzerland, Italy, Brazil, Belgium, Portugal, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and San Marino.
Numerous guests of the Flambeau d’Or Panathlon International were invited to vote for their favourite drawing of the exposition in Grenoble. The voters’ choice coincided with the winner chosen by the Selection Commission.
“Honorable Commendation of the Flambeau d’Or Panathlon International” is given by a considerable majority vote to Ernest Seah for the drawing “Fair Play”.
We note with pleasure that the drawings “Olympic Universe” and “Friendship, Fun and Fair Play” also became favorites of the exposition in Grenoble.
Inauguration speech was made by the Chairman of the Drawing Contest Selection Commission, Prof. Dr. Alain Verschoren, Prorector of the UAntwerpen, during the Flambeau D’Or Gala dinner in the Mercure Grenoble President.
The Antwerp delegation attended the Flambeau d’Or Award Ceremony of Jean Claude Killy on March 24th 2018, in the Prefecture of L’Isere Grenoble.
The Flambeau d’Or (Golden Torch) is an award that is presented every four years. It aims to reward distinguished international sport personalities.
Jean Claude Killy was a triple Olympic champion, winning the three alpine events at the 1968 Winter Olympics, becoming the most successful athlete in Grenoble.

The PCU Committee is pleased to present the 15 selected art works that will be exhibited during key Panathlon International and PCU Committee events.
Each drawing is accompanied by an Artist’s Statement, containing an interpretation of the art work in correlation with the theme of the contest and the artist’s bio facts.
Today, the Contest Selection Commission has announced the winners of the 2017 Antwerp University & Panathlon Drawing Contest. The 15 best drawings selected from 112 entries were presented to the Commission for the appointment of the three winners.
The Chairman of the Selection Commission, Prof. Dr. Alain Verschoren, Prorector of the University of Antwerp, expressed his admiration for the increased artistic level and the variety of drawing methods and techniques presented.
Therefore the Commission found it difficult to select a final winner of the first prize, and consequently, it was decided that two first prizes would be awarded, and also a third prize.
The first prize is shared between Ernest Seah from Singapore with «Fair Play» and Artem Tereschenko from Belarus with «Ludis Iungit». The third prize was awarded to Marcos Santos Magnani da Silva from Brazil with «Fair Play Volley». The Commission also decided to extend an honorable commendation to Aigul Kuldibaeva from Kazakhstan with «Creation of a Panathlete».

The yearly Sports Personalities evening was traditionally held at the University of Antwerp on February 15, 2018.
The ceremony started with Welcome words by Luc Verguts, Panathlon Antwerp President, who stressed the importance of Ethics and Fair Play in sports. Then guest speaker, Willy Van Hove – famous Belgian announcer at a lot of Belgian running and athletics events – spoke about the magic of the marathon.
Five students of the University of Antwerp who successfully combine their studies with their sports career were nominated for the Honorary Rector Francis Van Loon Award 2017. University of Antwerp students jad voted in the previous weeks and out of five nominees Basten Caerts, Belgian swim champion and Social-Economic Sciences student who broke no less than 7 Belgian records in 2017, was awarded the trophy.
The Panathlon Antwerp Sport Personality Award 2017 has been presented to
Hanna Mariën, former sprinter and bobsledder (gold 4x100m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 6th place two-man bobsleigh at the 2014 Sochi Olympics) for the valuable contribution she has made to Ethics in Sports during her active career and afterwards.
A special addition to the Sport Personality awards ceremony was the first exposition of the 15 selected art works of the PCU Drawing Contest 2017, which the guests were able to see before the selection of the three winners.

From 20 to 22 October 2017 Dubna hosted the 2nd PCU International Tennis Tournament (PIUTT) – a yearly tennis tournament organized by the University of Antwerp with the assistance of the Dubna State University and endorsed by the PCU Committee to promote ethics in sport and principles of fair play and Universal friendship.
The PIUTT is held as a part of the Panathlon International Movement for the promotion and spread of culture and sporting ethics, according to the official recognition of the International Olympic Committee from 1982.
On October 20, at the PIUTT Opening Ceremony the participants were greeted by the Representative of the Dubna City Administration Evgeny Stein, the Dubna State University Rector Dmitry Fursaev, the Prorector of the University of Antwerp Alain Verschoren, the PCU Committee President Peter Verboven and the Secretary General of the PCU Committee, His Excellency Ambassador, Anicet Gabriel Kotchofa. The PIUTT President, Honorary Rector of the University of Antwerp Francis Baron Van Loon announced the tournament officially open and made the draw.
According to the results of the Draw, the players were divided into two groups in the women’s and men’s singles categories and competed in a Round Robin System. Matches were held on the court of the Sport Complex “Olymp” of the Dubna State University on October 21 and 22. In total, 16 matches of the 1st and 2nd round took place on the first day of the competitions. Group results were announced after the 3rd round of the second day of competitions. In the final round as in the women’s as in the men’s singles categories students of the Russian Peoples’ Friendship University (Russia) and the University of Antwerp (Belgium) were competing for the title of the PIUTT Champion.
In the end, the RUDN students won: Anastasia Tsyganova and Boris Denisov. It is symbolic that in the tennis tournament devoted to the principles of fair play and Universal friendship, the students from the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia won. The winner of the silver and bronze PIUTT Cup 2017 in women’s singles became students of the University of Antwerp. The second and third place in the men’s singles category also were taken by players of Antwerp delegation.
No one lost. Everyone was awarded medals, certificates and souvenirs at the Closing Ceremony. And the most important thing is that participants really made friends, supported each other in the tournament, played fair, following the rules of ethics in sports and respecting the opponent.
For the first time within the framework of the tournament the exposition of the Antwerp University and Panathlon Drawing Contest, devoted to University Sport and Olympic principals, took place in Dubna. The results of the PIUTT Participants voting for the Honorable commendation were also announced at the Closing ceremony. The exposition of the 15 artworks from the student all over the world was an excellent addition to the tournament and cultural program. The voters’ choice is the painting “Olympiad” by Yana Ivanchina from St. Petersburg, Russia. Already in December, these artworks will be exposed in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne (Switzerland).
