In the spotlight: ÉTS Montreal at the PCU Games
It’s a rare occasion for the PCU Games to host teams from across the American continent, with only a few memorable instances of universities from Chicago and Panama participating in the past. That is why we are excited to extend a warm welcome to ÉTS Montreal from Canada for this year’s tournament. Founded in 1974, the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS Montréal) is a flagship institution of the Université du Québec network whose mission is the technological and economic development of Quebec. Specializing in applied engineering, ÉTS educates 25% of engineers in the province and has 11,000 students. It holds a prominent position in terms of graduation and ranks first among engineering faculties in Quebec and second in Canada. The engineers and researchers it trains are recognized for their unparalleled practical and innovative approach. Since its inception, ÉTS has forged strong partnerships with industry and the business community. It proves to be a valuable asset for established companies and also promotes, notably through its incubator Centech, the development of innovative and promising startups.
The ÉTS, a societal project
In the early 1970s, amidst the Quiet Revolution and in a Quebec undergoing significant changes, influential figures from the business and industry sectors argued for the necessity of creating a university dedicated to the teaching of technology. The École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) was founded to meet the need for training engineers with a more practical orientation, capable of assuming both strategic and technical roles. In just five decades, ÉTS has carved out a prominent place in the Quebec scene as well as internationally. Placing students at the center of its concerns, it offers a stimulating environment for teaching and research. A driving force for innovation, ÉTS is committed to a societal project aimed at building a sustainable, just, and prosperous future.
Applied Training: An Unparalleled Student Experience
Training at ÉTS focuses on an exceptional experience, offering students all the opportunities to develop their ideas and explore new perspectives to contribute to creating value for society. At all levels and in all study programs, students are introduced to high-level applied research and engage with industry, providing them with unique expertise valued by companies and organizations, and even equipping them to venture into entrepreneurship. The promise of ÉTS is to offer an innovative path, whether through cooperative education, more laboratory and practical work sessions than in any other engineering program in Quebec, or involvement in one of the many globally recognized student clubs. ÉTS accompanies its students so they can explore their full potential and become inspiring engineers essential to the society of tomorrow.
A privileged link with industry
At ÉTS, 60% of research activities are conducted in collaboration with organizations and companies in Quebec, Canada, and internationally. The school is proud to have the support of over 1200 companies each year, which not only offer internships to students but also entrust professors with developing industrial applications.
Cutting-edge research and technology transfer
ÉTS ranks 4th among Canadian universities in research intensity. Thanks to the close relationship ÉTS maintains with industry and funding agencies, professors and researchers conduct a multitude of activities within numerous cutting-edge laboratories, chairs, and research groups. They significantly contribute to scientific progress and the advancement of productivity and competitiveness in Quebec, while playing an essential role in training a highly qualified workforce.
Entrepreneurship: Innovating to Meet Tomorrow’s Challenges
Entrepreneurship is at the heart of the school’s mission because ÉTS firmly believes that new ideas are needed to meet the emerging needs of a constantly evolving society. ÉTS facilitates the creation of startups, notably through Centech, recognized as one of the top 10 university-based incubators in the world. Centech supports high-tech companies and projects with high growth potential, from conceptualization to commercialization, thanks to a bold, collaborative, and passionate ecosystem.
A School Open to the World
Internationalizing training and research activities, as well as developing industrial relations abroad, are priorities for ÉTS. With over a hundred international partnerships, ÉTS significantly contributes to Quebec’s economic development. Furthermore, it distinguishes itself with innovative student mobility models, significant growth in international students at the graduate level, flourishing research activities, scientific outreach, and globally impactful technology transfers.
