The first edition of the PCU International University Tennis Tournament (“PIUTT”) was held in Dubna, Moscow region, from 21 to 23 October 2016.
The Tennis Tournament was attended by teams from Belgium and Russia. Eight University teams from Antwerp, Moscow and Dubna competed in mixed doubles according to a Modified Knockout Draw System. The 4 teams that lost in the first round entered the Honorary Cup competition of the PIUTT 2016.
The starting lineup of the competition is determined by a random selection during a public draw ceremony at the Opening Ceremony October 21, 2016. In the official part of the Opening Ceremony welcoming words and wishes were pronounced by the Rector of Dubna State University Dmitry Fursaev, the Vice Mayor of the Dubna City Nikolay Madfes, the PCU Committee President Peter Verboven and other invited guests. The President of the PIUTT, Honorary Rector of the University of Antwerp, Professor dr. Francis Baron Van Loon declared the tournament officially open and held the Draw Ceremony. Traditionally the oaths of Fair Play of the participants and referees were sworn. The entertainment part of the Opening Ceremony was the performance of the Dubna University Chorus under the direction of O. Donchenko.
Competitions took place at the tennis court of Dubna University Sports Complex “Olymp” from 22 to 23 October 2016.
In the final, Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) and the Belgian Antwerp University Association competed for the title of the first champion of the PCU International University Tennis Tournament. The winner of the PIUTT Trophy 2016 became the MSU team. The cup for the second place went to Antwerp. The third place in the PIUTT tournament was won by the team of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia. The fourth place was taken by the first team of the Dubna State University.
The winner of the PIUTT Honorary Cup became the team of the Belgian University of Antwerp. The second honorable place was taken by the second team from the Dubna State University. The third place went to the team from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. And the fourth place went to the team from the Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology named after K.I. Skrjabin.
At the Closing Ceremony the PIUTT Organizing Committee awarded all players with cups, medals and participation certificates of the PIUTT. A surprise for all participants and spectators of the competition was the great dance flash mob of the Dubna University students.
Due to the successful organization of the tournament, supporting the principles of Fair Play and Universal Friendship at the Dubna University venue and the enthusiastic feedback from all participants, entries of more students from different countries are expected next year.
