Antwerp, Belgium – After a one-year pause due to infrastructural challenges with the previous host, the renowned AP | PCU Bridge Trophy is back, promising an exciting weekend of competitive student bridge with focus on the key Panathlon values of Fair Play and Universal Friendship. AP University of Applied Sciences and Arts Antwerp has stepped up as the new host, offering state-of-the-art facilities to accommodate participants and guests from across the world of Bridge, all in close cooperation with DUA, the student Bridge Club of the Antwerp metropolitan region.
This prestigious tournament, which brings together university bridge teams from the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, will officially kick off this Friday with the Opening Ceremony and a Welcome Pairs Tournament. Over the weekend, players will engage in a series of matches designed to test both strategic skill and teamwork, culminating in the awarding of the coveted Bridge Trophy.
The Bridge Trophy has long been a highlight for bridge-playing university students, providing a unique opportunity for them to compete internationally, network, and celebrate the timeless game of bridge. In the words of Gert Christens, AP Director Student Center, “Hosting the Bridge Trophy is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our commitment to both academic excellence and the fostering of intercultural connections through sports and intellectual pursuits.”
Following this year’s revival, the tournament is anticipated to return as an annual tradition, growing in reach and reputation. To ensure participants and supporters stay informed, the official website will be updated tomorrow with detailed tournament information, including schedules and participant lists.
With its return, the AP | PCU Bridge Trophy reinforces its legacy as a premier university-level bridge competition internationally, promoting not only skill and sportsmanship but also intercultural exchange among students. As the countdown begins, excitement builds for what promises to be a memorable and fiercely competitive weekend in Antwerp.
On August 2, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a significant collaborative event was held, bringing together four IOC-recognized organizations: Panathlon International, the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee (CIPC), the International Fair Play Committee (CIFP), and the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH). This event served as a key moment to strengthen the Olympic community by addressing various aspects of the Games and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
Representing Panathlon International, President Giorgio Chinellato, along with Past-President Pierre Zappelli and other executives, actively participated in the discussions, exploring avenues for stronger, unified efforts in the future.
Following the event, President Chinellato visited “Casa Italia,” where he observed the successful implementation of a joint project with District Italy and the Colors for Peace Association. Giorgio Costa, President of District Italy, also attended, engaging with CONI officials to further Panathlon’s presence at the Olympics.
During the 2024 PCU Games Closing Ceremony, ETS Montreal (Canada) was awarded by Gert Christens of AP with the Enrico Prandi Trophy! After every match the referees awarded Fair Play points to each team based upon conduct of the delegation and Fair Play on the field. The winner of the Fair Play ranking receives the Enrico Prandi Trophy, a prestigious award, unique in the world of university sport and the highest merit a university can achieve in relation to ethics in university sport. Enrico Prandi, born on May 21, 1945 (Italy), is the Past President of Panathlon International, former member of the International Olympic Committee Cultural Commission and former President of the Italian Basketball League. In 2010 he initiated the idea to create a university platform within Panathlon International to promote ethics in sport also within the worldwide university community.

With 61 participating teams, the PCU Games have exceeded all expectations. Looking ahead, the PCU Committee is committed to expanding the number of venues and volunteers for future editions. However, for this year’s event, we are constrained by the existing venues available to us. This constraint does not affect the sportive aspect, but it does have implications for the number of entry passes for the ceremonial proceedings.

It’s a rare occasion for the PCU Games to host teams from across the American continent, with only a few memorable instances of universities from Chicago and Panama participating in the past. That is why we are excited to extend a warm welcome to ÉTS Montreal from Canada for this year’s tournament. Check out more about the ÉTS Piranhas Futsal Team on www.etsmtl.ca/satellite/piranhas/equipes/futsal.
Founded in 1974, the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS Montréal) is a flagship institution of the Université du Québec network whose mission is the technological and economic development of Quebec. Specializing in applied engineering, ÉTS educates 25% of engineers in the province and has 11,000 students. It holds a prominent position in terms of graduation and ranks first among engineering faculties in Quebec and second in Canada. The engineers and researchers it trains are recognized for their unparalleled practical and innovative approach. Since its inception, ÉTS has forged strong partnerships with industry and the business community. It proves to be a valuable asset for established companies and also promotes, notably through its incubator Centech, the development of innovative and promising startups.
The ÉTS, a societal project
In the early 1970s, amidst the Quiet Revolution and in a Quebec undergoing significant changes, influential figures from the business and industry sectors argued for the necessity of creating a university dedicated to the teaching of technology. The École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) was founded to meet the need for training engineers with a more practical orientation, capable of assuming both strategic and technical roles. In just five decades, ÉTS has carved out a prominent place in the Quebec scene as well as internationally. Placing students at the center of its concerns, it offers a stimulating environment for teaching and research. A driving force for innovation, ÉTS is committed to a societal project aimed at building a sustainable, just, and prosperous future.
Applied Training: An Unparalleled Student Experience
Training at ÉTS focuses on an exceptional experience, offering students all the opportunities to develop their ideas and explore new perspectives to contribute to creating value for society. At all levels and in all study programs, students are introduced to high-level applied research and engage with industry, providing them with unique expertise valued by companies and organizations, and even equipping them to venture into entrepreneurship. The promise of ÉTS is to offer an innovative path, whether through cooperative education, more laboratory and practical work sessions than in any other engineering program in Quebec, or involvement in one of the many globally recognized student clubs. ÉTS accompanies its students so they can explore their full potential and become inspiring engineers essential to the society of tomorrow.
A privileged link with industry
At ÉTS, 60% of research activities are conducted in collaboration with organizations and companies in Quebec, Canada, and internationally. The school is proud to have the support of over 1200 companies each year, which not only offer internships to students but also entrust professors with developing industrial applications.
Cutting-edge research and technology transfer
ÉTS ranks 4th among Canadian universities in research intensity. Thanks to the close relationship ÉTS maintains with industry and funding agencies, professors and researchers conduct a multitude of activities within numerous cutting-edge laboratories, chairs, and research groups. They significantly contribute to scientific progress and the advancement of productivity and competitiveness in Quebec, while playing an essential role in training a highly qualified workforce.
Entrepreneurship: Innovating to Meet Tomorrow’s Challenges
Entrepreneurship is at the heart of the school’s mission because ÉTS firmly believes that new ideas are needed to meet the emerging needs of a constantly evolving society. ÉTS facilitates the creation of startups, notably through Centech, recognized as one of the top 10 university-based incubators in the world. Centech supports high-tech companies and projects with high growth potential, from conceptualization to commercialization, thanks to a bold, collaborative, and passionate ecosystem.
A School Open to the World
Internationalizing training and research activities, as well as developing industrial relations abroad, are priorities for ÉTS. With over a hundred international partnerships, ÉTS significantly contributes to Quebec’s economic development. Furthermore, it distinguishes itself with innovative student mobility models, significant growth in international students at the graduate level, flourishing research activities, scientific outreach, and globally impactful technology transfers.
